I wanted to share my love of the World Cup and the neighborhood I live and work in! After speaking with other neighborhood residents, I shared my thoughts, plans, and created the GWAP!
One of the best parts of this amazing south Seattle neighborhood is the art and artists. It’s something that should be shared with the world and will hopefully bring World Cup travelers and future visitors.
48 teams, representing 48 countries. Previous tournaments only had 32 teams, which makes 2026 World Cup unique. This increase in teams means there will be a lot more international attendees and supporters. We want to have at least one mural per country, so it is all-inclusive.
Yes! 48 is the minimum number, one for each country/team. If more muralists and businesses want to participate, and possibly showcase other countries/art, we would love to make that possible!
Walking safety and accessibility were the key contributors, especially for those unfamiliar with Georgetown and visiting without transportation. This will make it easier for viewers and travelers to see all 48 murals. However, I will include a list and map of other Georgetown murals, either current or future ones, that are not in the defined GWAP area.
No! We would love for any businesses that are outside the defined area and/or ones that do not have mural space, to help collaborate. Other businesses could also co-sponsor and support the murals and artists, through supplies, donations, etc. I would be happy to help make the connections and those interested should reach out!
Ultimately, the participating businesses will have final say. I have a (growing) list of artists and muralists and will be working with the Georgetown community to make connections and recommendations. Any interested artists should reach out ASAP!
Nothing! I have created and managed this project in my own free time. I only want to support, guide and help the Georgetown neighborhood, businesses and artists. I will use my previous World Cup connections (see the ‘About Me’ portion) to help promote and market GWAP.
It depends on each artist and their asking price. Every mural will be a contracted agreement between the artist(s) and business(es) and/or building owner(s). I have a boilerplate template agreement that be shared with participants, as needed.
On top of being compensated for their work, GWAP pieces will be marketed, displayed and viewed by thousands, if not millions, of attendees/fans for the world’s largest sporting event. My 2022 World Cup Alcohol Map has almost 3.5 million views and was featured in the New York Times, Sport Illustrated, Yahoo, etc. I envision (and hope) that GWAP will reach a larger audience and even more viewers!
If having an amazing, unique mural isn’t enough of a reason, then here are some other things to consider:
The indirect benefits are numerous!!!
GWAP is meant to showcase artists’ talents and creativity, while depicting the country they are representing that aligns with the world’s sport. We suggest that murals be welcoming to all visitors & viewers, preferably avoiding any controversies nor displaying offensive material. Participating businesses and artists should work together to have an mutually agreed upon plan/design before it is started.
No, but we would like groups and organizations to participate and become involved. Those interested should reach out
Preferably, before April 2026, as the 2026 World Cup kicks-off on June 11th. This will allow for promotion and planning along all facets.
Hopefully, all GWAP murals become a permanent part of Georgetown. The envision is this will open up the door for other artists and muralists alike, to create more pieces and “fill in the gaps” all over the neighborhood. Possibly become the next Mission District in San Francisco or Shoreditch in London.
“Tagging” has been prevalent and is a costly issue in Georgetown and Seattle. The hope is that “taggers” would respect art & artists. Businesses have seen this to be true with current murals, most have typically been left alone for all to enjoy.
The Georgetown community would love for any businesses to host a celebration or party for each GWAP piece that is kicked-off and/or completed. Possibly have culinary traditions & regional music for the mural’s country that is represented. Feature the artist, their other works, and so-on.
